Medical apps not to miss
By OG Medicine
Here’s a curated list, by doctors for doctors, of the most helpful medical apps for clinical practice. Not technically breaking news, but still noteworthy.
1.UpToDate
This is a no brainer - a must for any physician, but does come with a hefty price tag. See if your institution has free access.
2. Diagnosaurus® DDx
One of my favourite apps during GIM training, and even still to this day. Provide a symptom and get a list of possible etiologies. I find it really helpful to double check I haven’t missed any possibilities, and prevent premature decision-closure (where you stop entertaining new ideas, even when there’s mounting evidence that you’re wrong).
3. Buddy Call
Created by a colleague in response to the mounting cost of on-call apps for learners. It’s a free resource, created by physicians, to help with those overnight calls as a medical student, resident, or practicing physician.
4. Bugs and Drugs
Comprehensive app that includes all the common AND random bacteria you can’t otherwise find listed on UpToDate. It will tell you susceptibility patterns and first-line treatment options.
5. Read by QxMD
Summaries of most of the landmark trials in internal medicine. Work smart, not hard.
6. Calculate by QxMD
Same great developers, this time bringing you all the clinical decision rules and risk scores in one place. Well’s? Frax? Framingham? You name it, they’ve got it.
